SUMMARY:Construction Bookkeeping Technician: More Than Accounting
DESCRIPTION:Have you looked at the Construction Bookkeeping Technician (CBT) course and thought it wasn’t for you because you aren’t in accounting?  I’d like to change your way of thinking, because construction bookkeeping touches more than just accounting.\nA project begins with the estimate, from which a budget is derived.  That budget becomes part of the Job Cost module of construction bookkeeping and a very important tool for tracking the profitability of a project.  It also ties into the schedule of values, which is how the job is billed.  This is all entered and tracked through the Accounts Receivables module of construction bookkeeping.\nWhen materials are ordered for the job site and paid for, or subcontractors are used, these are all tracked through the Accounts Payable area in construction bookkeeping.  Tracking employees’ hours and making sure they are paid is all part of the Payroll module of construction bookkeeping.\nThese are all tied together in the General Ledger, where financial statements are created that show how the company, as a whole, is performing. No matter what your role is in a construction company, it helps to understand how the company’s project information is being tracked and used to ensure individual projects and the company are performing well.\nThe NAWIC Education Foundation (NEF) will be offering an online, instructor-led, CBT course in January 2027.  This course will cover General Ledger, Job Cost, Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Payroll.  This is a beginner-level course, so no matter what your level of understanding is, whether you are in accounting or not, you will get a lot of information from this course that you can use right away.\n– Karen Hager, CBT, CDP, CDT, CIS, CIT, ESP\nNEF Trustee\nAll sessions will be held on Thursdays from 6-8 p.m. Eastern:\n\nJanuary 7th\nJanuary 14th\nJanuary 21st\nJanuary 28th\n\nMaterials Needed:\nYou must purchase the CBT book, in either print or electronic format, prior to the start of the class.
